 In what will likely be my last #Bangabandhu launch image, I present a sequence taken from may pad remote camera, positioned 1,300 feet from the #SpaceX #Block5 #Falcon9 rocket, launched from LC39A on May 11, 2018. As the title suggests, the photos span just one second as the rocket lifted off the pad. The Block5 rocket is very easy on the eyes; the black landing legs and interstage are just plain cool. SpaceX Pad Abort Test

Earlier today SpaceX tested the launch abort system on their crew capsule. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk explained that today was a "great, great outcome" and "had there been people on board they would have been in great shape." The capsule shot off the pad, accelerating from 0-100mph in just 1.2 seconds and reached a maximum speed of 345mph. (This sequence of shots spans less than 2 seconds.)

SpaceX CRS9 Falcon9 rocket launch and landing

This is a single, 483 second exposure of the Falcon9 CRS9 rocket, launched (and landed!) at 12:45a on July 18, 2016 from CCAFS by Elon Musk and SpaceX. The streak to the left is the launch streak and then the straight line to the right shows the landing of the first stage of the Falcon9 rocket approximately 9 minutes after launch. Most launch and landing streaks are a composite; this is a single image. Also, people ask why the clouds don't appear to have moved in the image, and the answer is simple: it's 12:45 in the morning, so with the exception of the moment that the rocket is passing through them, the clouds are not visible; it's night and therefore the sky is dark (the aperture setting is f22). Also, this photo was chosen as NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for July 21, 2016. Echostar XXIII launch by SpaceX

And of course I grabbed some star (and Moon!) trails while waiting for the #Echostar23 #Falcon9 launch by #SpaceX, seen here from the A. Max Brewer Bridge in Titusville. As noted previously, the rocket trajectory carried the rocket almost directly away from me, thus eliminating the typical arc you see if I were to the south of the pad. The details: 57 frames at 30 secs, ISO400, f6.3 and the last two frames were shot at ISO400, f18 for 164 secs and 167, with the 167 second frame being the rocket streak. Initial processing done in Lightroom, stacking done in Photoshop and then final edits done (again) in Lightroom.

BulgariaSat1 by SpaceX - Pad Streak

Achievement Unlocked: Attempt a Pad Streak With a direct nod to those who blazed the trail before me, I present my attempt to pull off a rocket streak using a pad camera, during the day. With apologies to anyone I'm forgetting to acknowledge in this tag-fest, the first time I saw this kind of shot was Bill Ingalls' fabulous pad streak of a Soyuz. Alan Walters' pad streaks are amazing, and John Studwell and Bill Jelen have joined the party as well. Ben Cooper is doing next-level streak imagery; specifically, the landing streak he did is the stuff of legends. And, it was Bill Jelen aka Mr. Excel who, after successfully capturing a pad streak last launch, brought an extra camera to my house the other night with the specific suggestion that I try the streak. (The camera is actually Jared Haworth's camera that he leaves in Florida for We Report Space to, well, report space.) So, here it is. This is actually 2 frames, both of them 20-second exposures shot through a 10-stop ND filter. I'm using 2 frames to bring out some of the detail that was obscured in the first (the launch) frame; by the time the second exposure fired, much of the cloud had dissipated. Initial edits were done in Lightroom, the composite was done in Photoshop and then final edits were done (again) in Lightroom.
